A Little Autumn Photoshoot

Back in the day, those glorious days where my children would sit still and smile on command, we would go out and take photos a lot. Not just on our travels or on days out, because on those days it’s a given that you would have your camera with you, but just going out purposefully to take a few photos. As a result I have so many beautiful memories of my children’s earliest days (here are a few of my favourites but there are literally hundreds). Photography was my number one passion, I went from not being able to take a photo that wasn’t blurry to teaching myself how to take my camera off auto and actually take a good picture).

But somehow life got busy and I got out of the habit. A lot of that is down to now having a You Tube channel, I capture our ordinary moments and day to day life on there now. For me having video memories of my children is something that just cannot be beaten, to be able to look back in twenty years and hear their little voices and see their mannerisms. Of course I still capture a million photos of the children, far more than most I am sure, but a lot of the time these are just around the house on my phone or with my ‘big camera’ when we are on our travels. I don’t tend to go out and specifically just take photos anymore. A part of that is also down to the girls being at an age where they don’t really want to sit and pose for their Mummy, I actually find video a lot less intrusive as I can video snippets of them while they are getting on with stuff, rather than them having to stop and smile at my camera. Plus while the girls sat there happily when they were younger, our boy couldn’t be any more different. It is nigh on impossible to get him to sit still for a photo, even with raisin bribes as a back up.

The other day after school we decided to go out for a walk to blow away the cobwebs and escape that crazy time between dinner and bedtime. We do this often, whether it’s on their scooters or a trip to the park. But this time I decided to take the DSLR with me and capture a few shots. Monsoon very kindly sent us these beautiful coats the other day (red one here, mustard yellow one here and navy blue one here) as a thank you as I am working with them on a halloween blog post for their blog, and it was the first time they had worn them. Regular readers of this blog will know that the girls are very particular about what they wear, but as soon as I saw these matching but not matching coats for all three, I knew that they would love them (They are from the boys section but I don’t think that matters at all, we often buy them things across different genders in high street shops). I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to take some photos of them all.

It actually turned into a mini photo shoot and they were all on amazing form, smiling away and actually wanting me to take photos of them (apart from our little boy who just tried to escape at every opportunity!). I forgot what it was like to feel the satisfaction of taking some beautiful photos you are really proud of. I adore every single one of these and no doubt will share far too many of them on instagram. It’s reminded me just how much I love taking photos, we definitely need to do it more often and I am going to make it my mission to go out and take some more over the next couple of months (not just on holidays, special occasions or days out).

Autumn is the best time of year to take photos I think, the light is beautiful (golden light is my favourite), there are stunning colours everywhere, and you can bundle them up in gorgeous autumn/winter clothes without it being too cold. I just love these photos so much and there will definitely be some going in frames for our new house.

NB: Thanks so much for Monsoon for sending us these beautiful coats and also my lovely snuggly grey cardigan too. All words and opinions are completely my own.
