{The Ordinary Moments 16} #31 ‘A Little Blog Refresh’

I don’t know about anyone else but as soon as I have finished decorating one room in my house, I immediately want to change another one. I get bored quite easily and often fancy a change, although of course unfortunately we can’t constantly keep changing the rooms in our home. The same goes for my blog, I often want to change things, to tweak things and to add new bits and bobs, but at the same time I am aware that too much change isn’t a good thing. We all like familiarity.

My blog was completely redesigned a year or so ago. I went from the most awful un-user friendly blog platform called joomla and switched to wordpress. My lovely husband (who is handy to have around as he is a designer and developer) spent literally a week transferring, sorting and re-developing my blog behind the scenes, which was a mammoth job, to basically what you still see now. A couple of weeks ago I finally transferred hosts, after experiencing far too much downtime with my previous one. This then made me finally decide to have a little refresh of my blog as I needed to update things to include our baby boy.

For so long I have debated changing my blog name. I still absolutely hate the name Mummy Daddy Me, but I also think I have spent five years building up this blog and this name, and so it would be really silly to change it. However I wanted to make my blog a little more ‘me’, although we are a family blog, I also have a lot of other passions, including travel, interiors, design and photography, and I wanted to make my blog feel a little more grown up, even though it still has the ‘Mummy’ connotation in the name. My children are still tiny, so I don’t feel the need to change it, after all being a Mummy is still the most important thing in the world to me, and I can just write about what I want under this name anyway. I loved my current clean design, it is easy (I hope) to read and navigate. Therefore I saw no need to change the overall style of my blog, (if it aint broke don’t fix it and all that) but I decided last week to take it offline for a couple of days and have a little refresh of some key aspects.

The first main thing you will notice is I have changed my logo and colour scheme. While I loved my old logo, our little family photo, I was never massively keen on my colour scheme of burgundy, pink and grey. I also found that my illustration felt a bit too cutesy and babyish for how I am currently feeling. As a family we absolutely love bright primary colours, from the interior of our house to the clothes we wear, and so I wanted my blog to reflect this more.

I decided on the yellow, red and mint colour scheme after taking inspiration from the below photos from a recent holiday to Majorca. These are my favourite colours and are just so much more ‘us’.

We then set about creating a new logo and after going back and forth for ages, I decided I just wanted it to be really simple to let my photos do the talking, while still maintaining a bit of a fun factor- after all this is a family blog. I love the final one my husband designed, my main passions are photography and travel and I think you can look at the logo and pretty much tell what we are all about. It’s simple, more ‘grown up’ but still ‘me’ and that is what I wanted.

Travel is such a huge part of this blog and our family life, so I wanted to really emphasise that a little more in my new refresh. The main things I have done is added a new introductory travel page ‘our family wanderlust’ which I am really pleased with and Jon has also created me a interactive travel map of the places which we have been, which I just LOVE. I love that this will help showcase our little adventures more. (The map is best viewed on a desktop)

I then of course needed to make sure I added our baby boy to all the pages, as he previously wasn’t included on there. I’ve refreshed our about page and updated the photos and words. In fact I have pretty much updated all my pages- including our questions page, our contact us page, our hire us page and our favourite photography page. I also really love our little films page, as all my videos are listed there in chronological order and I am really massively getting into making videos at the moment. If you are a regular reader you will notice that I have also changed the typography on the homepage as well, I just wanted something a little less bold and a little more clean looking and subtle. I’ve also made quite a lot of the pages with full width images.

I wanted to completely change our ‘work with us’ page as I have done so many amazing things with brands that I want to shout about, but I found my previous page quite hard to read and navigate as I crammed so much onto the page. We created a grid with the brand logos, and if you click on them you go to separate pages listing what I have done with that brand. This was the most time consuming of all (bar the travel map) and it is still not completely done as I have other things I want to add, but I hope that this way is a bit more user friendly and really showcases some of the amazing opportunities we have had.

Finally I’ve been going back and forth for months about whether I should put our children’s names on this blog. Jon (I’m using his name too now!) has never seen a problem with it but for so many years I didn’t, because I was worried mainly about their digital footprint in terms of friends googling their names when they got older. However I also have had a realisation that this blog is such a huge part of our lives, and I hope they will be proud when they are older. As they get older if they no longer want to appear on it, I would stop showing them on here anyway.

As its got bigger they’ve been mentioned on brand campaigns and things, and as I’ve started doing more videos, I find it incredibly hard and unnatural to not say their names on camera. When our baby boy was born I can’t even begin to say how many messages I got asking his name and I felt like such a wally saying that I didn’t share them. So I’ve decided to say my children’s names on my about page. I still feel my original reasons still make sense, so I’m not going to freely write their names all over my blog constantly, but it just makes it so much easier to not have hide them anymore. I am just going to be more relaxed on here and social media, I still will probably avoid typing them if I can, and still not over use them so they don’t get picked up too much via Google. However any one can google my name so if someone really wanted to find them they could have done previously.

So ‘meet’ my babies- Madeleine, Charlotte (never called Charlotte, only Lottie) and Wren.

And there you have it. It’s just a minor refresh really, although it has taken us three nights solid work (why is everything so time consuming?!) to get it all done. I am really so pleased with it, this blog is essentially my fourth baby (so many babies!) and like most bloggers, I put my heart and soul into it. I love that my new look is more ‘me’ and I feel very grateful to Jon for helping me so much and supporting my passions. He is getting into taking photos and making videos much more, and I love that we have this shared passion that we share together.

If you see any glitches let me know, it’s impossible to check it on every device!

Thanks Laura, I am so pleased with the new look. It was just some subtle changes but I think it has made all the difference. xx

  • I’ve got to admit I’ve been so excited to see your little update and it genuinely looks so lovely! Love the colours, new logo and the map is a brilliant idea! I’m a complete amateur in the blogging world, but I know it can take hours just to make the slightest change for new layouts and blog workings, so this would have taken a lot of effort. Well done, you must be so pleased!
(Also if it is any help, I read your blog on my laptop and it is all loading/working fine.)

  • Charlotte says:

It looks lovely Katie, and your children have beautiful names. I know someone with a little girl called Wren 🙂

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Charlotte, I think that Wren is more commonly used as a girl name but like Robin it is unisex. I think it is quite unusual for both girls and boys. xx

  • Mary says:

I totally know what you mean about wanting to constantly change things infact I did our room teal a year ago and totally want to change it AGAIN!! ha! I really like you new look though Katie and it looks great and fresh! I certainly feel inspired to write a wanderlust too instead of always just talking about wanting to go here and there. I love the specifics of it and simple activities..
The underlined ME does draw attention to You and the logo is fab x

    • Katie Ellison says:

Haha I am glad it isn’t just me! Love a switch round. An thanks Mary, I am so pleased with the new look, especially the logo. x

Hello Maddy, Lottie and Wren officially!!! 🙂 I think it’s ingrained in me now to say their pen names. Love the blog refresh. The logo is completely you down to a tee. And the colours are so unique. It’s a really fab design!

    • Katie Ellison says:

I think I will always use their blog names, it feels so natural now! And thank you, I am so pleased with the colours and the logo. xx

  • Amy Treasure says:

It looks absolutely wonderful Katie. I know what you mean about the names thing-I’ve never hidden the children’s names as didn’t even think about it years ago when I was beauty blogging and then when I switched to a more family vibe I did worry I’d made a mistake sharing them but like you say with some work and video they are shared inadvertently anyway. I’m having a refresh soon and changing my band because I absolutely hate it with a passion! Slightly scared but we will see! Yours looks fab xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Amy, I am so pleased with it. And how exciting that you are gong for a name change! Can’t wait to see it. xx

  • Amy Treasure says:

Name not band. I am NOT in a band LMAO

  • Sam says:

Wren! What a great name. It was so funny, I had stumbled upon your blog recently, via your Youtube account, and about 2 days later walking along my street I saw a huge Cadbury billboard with you, Madeline and Lottie on it! I guess it was a sign that I should follow you. I am absolutely baby mad at the moment, planning on starting to try to conceive later this year, and so have been trawling your pregnancy post archives like a crazy woman.

Love the new blog design, I think it’s elegant, trendy and sums up exactly what your blog is about!

  • Anna-Marie says:

LOVE this post Katie I think its always nice to have a blog refresh and I am in love with your new design. I love the layout and I am so pleased yu kept it the same. Your blog is definitely one I aspire too 😉 !I have always been intrigued by your little ones names and am forever guessing. Until recently I heard Lottie’s name on video and Mads I guessed obviously. I had no idea what baby boy was called, but I absolutely adore it. Gorgeous name for a very gorgeous boy. xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Anna-Marie, yes I love having a little refresh, I am so pleased with the new design. And thank you, we love our babies names. xx

  • It looks awesome! I love the logo and I got the point straight away, before reading your explanation of what you wanted it to represent. It suits this blog well and the stories you tell and show.

I like the ideas of separate brand work pages and the travel map, those will make it much easier to showcase your work here

I’ve only had a quick look on my android mobile, and so far I haven’t noticed any glitches. Very much liking it 😊

  • I wanted a Lottie so much but our surname is L and my husband vetoed it!
I look forward to having a nose round the new site. Just love the logo xx

  • Your site is looking lovely and I love the new header and logo. I love the names of your children, Madeleine was the name I wanted for a girl if I had one. Two boys and no plans for any more babies and that won’t be happening 😉

    Stevie x

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks lovely I am so pleased with it. And I always wanted a girl called Madeleine, it’s a lovely name isn’t it? x

  • Gorgeous Katie, I LOVE it. Can’t wait to have a good nosey around properly on the laptop later (on my phone now but it all looks so good). You and Jon are such a good team. Also you already know I think your family have beautiful names Xxx I know it’s been a big thing for you, well done for taking the plunge. I LOVE the new logo. Xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Alexandra, I am so pleased with it. I am so lucky that Jon is so supportive of my passions and we have become a team now. xx

  • It looks fabulous Katie and its great to see your little boy across the pages also. Such beautiful names, as i never doubted but you have just saved my curiosity. I’ve noticed recently people have started using my LB’s name in comments and i have wondered whether to do the same thing, but we shall see. Refreshing does seem to take forever, you are very lucky to have someone who has a clue what to do, as honestly I’ve spent hours playing around to try and achieve something with no luck! Congratulations on the success and pure gorgeousness of this blog and your little family. xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Gem, it is hard to know what to do about names isn’t it? And thank you I am really pleased with my little refresh. x

  • Love the new look xx

  • ALI says:

Your blog is so well laid out, easy to navigate and your love of photography shines through in your beautiful photos. But the main reason I follow your blog is your writing. Your posts really connect with the reader and unlike some blogs I follow, where I would skim through their updates, your writing entraps the reader wanting them to read from beginning to end (well it does with me anyway). Your husband has done an amazing job. I love the new logo and the modern colours.

  • Ali says:

I really like the new design and love the interactive map! You have so much more of the world to see with your little family! I know what you mean about the children’s names. I find it really hard to avoid using them on video so it makes sense that they are on the blog too, although I still use nicknames there. It’s a hard decision isn’t it!

  • Kerri-Ann says:

Aww I love the new look Katie, especially that it makes you feel more like you. It’s so important to have your own identity. I know what you mean about wanting to constantly tinker, whether home or on the blog. I’m having mine refreshed when we’re on holiday next week as well as a two rooms in the house. I hope you’d had a lovely weekend x

  • Laura says:

Loving the new look Katie! I have followed your blog from the beginning and it continues to be one of my favourites. Loving your little boy’s name; it’s so unusual.

  • I love it! You’re both very talented and your logo really reflects you, your family and your blog it’s such a clever design. Beautiful kiddie names too! I always assumed Mads was Madison. I have the same dilemma in my head with sharing their names but we always go with our gut with that one. Will there be a site redesign at all too? X

  • Lisa says:

I love your blog re-design. The logo is perfect and totally describes you down to a tee via.

I love your babies names too. I have often wondered what they are called but totally respected your decision not to share so I never asked. I’m the same, I only use my children’s initials but I hate reading my posts back and seeing just a letter when I talk about them. I’ve been trying to come up with blog nicknames for them instead x

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Lisa I am so pleased with the logo especially. It is hard to come to a decision and know what to do about names, I battled back and forth for years but I am comfortable with my decision of sharing but not over sharing them now. x

  • Donna says:

I love your new logo and it really does sum up your family in one image. A really lovely update – lovely colours too. I’m sure I knew the children’s names already and they work so well together x

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Donna I do think the logo is much more us now if that makes sense! And thank you, I love the colours. xx

  • Steph says:

I have just been commenting on your instagram but I will say the same again, I love the new look, I think it is absolutely perfect for you and your family, such a great re-design. The interactive map is such a cool feature too!

Love your children’s names 🙂 xx

  • Emma Shilton says:

Love the little refresh Katie, it’s really lovely and very you!

I was watching some of your videos earlier and love the use of the drone camera filming the car driving from above, how clever is that?!

Love the name reveal too xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Em I am really pleased with it. And thank you we have been trying to be more creative with our videos. xx

  • I love it! Your logo is perfect! My hubby is also a web designer and graphic designer and he built my blog on Joomla too before we migrated it to WP, gosh isn’t it just a mammoth task? Worth it though.
I think your children have beautiful names and it sounds like you have a nice balance now. I have sometimes wondered about the potential future ramifications of using Toby and Martha’s names online, but it’s something Phil and I discussed and feel we can handle xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Joomla is a nightmare isn’t it? I hated it so much- so un user friendly. And thank you lovely, I love your babies names too. xx

  • It looks amazing, Katie! I love the change in colours. I liked the pinks but think these are much more you. I’ve been thinking about changing mine for a while now (about a year) but I should probably use my spare time to actually blog rather than dither over the minutest change in font sizes (procrastinate, much? ;)) x

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Rachel, I do definitely think these colours are more me. I love bright primary colours now. And blog design is always tricky isn’t it? There is never enough time to get it done! xx

  • Molly says:

Looks so pretty – glad you came to a decision re. the name thing. And what lovely names they are. xxx

  • It is beautiful Katie, the logo perfectly reflects what you are doing now. It would seem so strange to me if you weren’t Mummy Daddy Me anymore, I’m glad you’ve decided to keep it for now. I get what you mean about the children’s names, I don’t try to hide my twins names anymore, I tend to use them on social media but not as much on my blog. We do actually call them Boo and Bear at home a fair bit, and they call each other that too so it doesn’t seem that strange to use them online. Must admit I’ve been curious about your baby boy’s name and it is lovely to finally hear it, it really does suit him! You’ve done amazing things with your blog, it’s totally inspiring and you should be very proud xx

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Hayley I definitely think this one is a lot more me and reflects our passions more. It is hard to know what to do about names isn’t it? I was just struggling so much in videos and I think now I have come to a decision with sharing but not over sharing that feels right for me. xx

  • Love your blog re-design, I’m exactly the same get bored easily and like to change things up. Whether it be the house or my blog. I agree with everyone else, your blog name is you and if you were to change it would be weird ha! It’s nice that you’ve decided to share all the kids names on the blog, I already knew their names but I’m not sure if I’ve ever told you how nicely they all go together 🙂 xx #Theordinarymoments

    • Katie Ellison says:

Thanks Kerry, yes you change your blog around quite a bit but I love that it always still feels exactly like you. x

  • Naomi says:

Exciting little changes, and the children’s names are gorgeous. Nice to know your husband’s name too! I really like the clean feel of your blog and find it very easy to navigate. The new logo looks fab, and certainly sums up your site.

  • zoe says:

Aw Katie what an awesome name for your boy! Love the refresh, you’ve totally inspired me to be brave and think about travelling with the children rather than wait the the husband and I are old and wrinkly!

    • Katie Ellison says:

Ah thanks Zoe, we love his name, it is unusual but as soon as I heard it I knew I wanted to call him that. And glad I have inspire you, travelling with children is amazing honestly. xx

  • Laura says:

Love the logo! I’m looking to give mine a bit of a refresh. It was one of those botched together jobs that I’ve never got round to finishing. Love the name Wren!

  • Charlotte says:

Ha ha, I was convinced LB was “Robin”, and I smiled every time he was dressed up in something batman related, as I thought it was a little clue 😉

    • Katie Ellison says:

Quite a few people thought he was robin. I guess that is another unisex bird name too- I do really like the name Robin actually. x

  • I love the new look and that you are sharing their names now, I always wanted to write Lottie in comments and had to stop myself!

  • Loving the new look Katie, it is very you! Also so so lovely to finally know your babies beautiful names!! xo

  • I love the new look, it’s very you and such gorgeous names for your three. xx

  • Looking forward to checking out changes later on laptop. I really love the logo and colours. I know you are a very proud mother and totally should be but I think focusing on your interests and lifestyle topics will be well received by readers. Exciting times ahead for you and your family.

  • I absolutely love your new logo Katie and it reflects you perfectly. Also love the interactive map of the places you have visited. I keep meaning to put one on mine (though I am sure I can only cope with a really simple one as I am a tech phobe lol). Aw love the name Wren, I have never heard of Wren before but it is gorgeous just like the girls names x

  • Your blog make over is wonderful, there is nothing like a refresher. I love that you have shared their names, Wren is such a divine name. Ever since I saw you share their names on FB I have been constantly thinking about sharing Baby’s. Although it has always been her nickname, she mentions her names in videos and then I have to cut it out and edit bedrooms pics if you can see the wall transfer with her name on it. Also I have to watch my tattoo isn’t in shot! Quite exhausting really! Maybe I will follow your lead xx

  • Mads says:

    Great job, everything looks fab!
