Sisters.
In 1993 my ten year old self got a little shock when my Mum and Dad announced I was going to be a big sister. Even at my young age I knew that my parent's desperately wanted another child but were having troubles concieving, yet it still came as a surprise to me to know that there was going to be a baby in the house.
I still remember them telling me. We were in the living room of our old house and when my Mum told me I wasn't too surprised as she had been asking me earlier in the car whether I would like a brother or sister. Talk about subtle hints. Still when they did spill the beans, I jumped around the room in excitement.
I remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. My Mum had to have an elective c-section due to me arriving prematurely due to pre-eclampsia, and when my Dad picked me up from school and drove me to the hospital I went straight into the room and totally ignored the baby lying in the cot and hugged my Mum- I didn't know what to do with her! Soon after a while though, I loved being the envy of all my friends by having a tiny baby sister and as she grew up we had great fun bossing her around, dressing her up and putting makeup on her. Anna's was the first nappy I changed all those years ago!
Throughout her life I have been fiercely protective of her, I remember once going to a park and an older teenage boy was swinging too high on the swings, I told him to be careful and he wouldn't listen- he ended up knocking her over. I got so cross that I ended up thumping him- not something I would recommend! I still am now, she is off to Magaluf on a girl's holiday soon and I find that all a bit scary as to me she is still so young and innocent. I dread to think of her getting up to the thing's I used to do.
Fast forward a few years, and I left home at eighteen going off to university. At this time Anna was just eight, and we were worlds apart. After all how can you have much in common at that stage? I didn't really have that much to do with her for a few years, of course I saw her when I came home to visit my Mum, but she was too little for me to relate too. I loved her lots, after all she was my little sister, but it wasn't a close relationship. People often used to think that we were half sisters or step sisters as the age gap was so big.
Four years ago Mr E and I moved back to Cambridgeshire after a few years spent in Leeds and London. By this time my sister was fourteen and as we lived with my Mum for a bit we started seeing each other more and spending lots more time together. Soon we became very close, and I have loved watching her grow from a little girl into an adult.
On December 13th last year my little sister turned eighteen. I still can't believe she is an adult. She is in her final year, doing her A Levels, and although she isn't as academic as I was, she is very creative and loves Art. She doesn't know what she wants to do with her life, but I hope whatever she does, she does something that will make her happy. It's funny watching her embrace her final year, and she totally reminds me of how I was at that age- I just wanted my exams done so I could go out at experience the world.
Nowadays we are the best of friends. Considering the ten year age gap, we are so close, and we spend loads of time together. We both have the same sense of humour, in fact Anna and I laugh at exactly the same things, often our family look at us strangely as we just seem to get each other's sarcastic jokes.
She is a fantastic Auntie to Mads who calls her 'Nanna' as she can't quite say Anna yet. We argue like cat and dog, she is going through that 'stage' that we all went through at eighteen, but I can quite honestly say that I love her to bits. The ten year age gap makes no difference, we are as close as if there was only two years.
I am proud to call her my little sister.
