AD- This post is in collaboration with VELUX, I am one of their ambassadors this year- all content and opinions are entirely my own though.
Our extension is the hub of our home. It’s the room we spend 90% of our time in when we are downstairs, it’s the room we snuggle up and watch a film on a Sunday afternoon, or have a ‘carpet picnic’ on the floor as a treat. It’s where Jon and I put our feet up after the kids have gone to bed and switch off and watch tv, or it’s where the children run in and out of all day when they are playing in the garden.
When we decided to rip down our existing old fashioned pvc roofed conservatory when we first moved into our family home two years ago, we wanted a space that was usable and practical all year round. And we have definitely achieved that, we enjoy the room 365 days a year. However it’s in the warm and sunny weather that it really comes into it’s own.
This is the first summer since we moved in two years ago that we are going to really enjoy the benefits properly of this beautiful space. Of course we have enjoyed it since we first had it built. But what makes this summer slightly different is that our garden makeover is pretty much finished and we are planning to enjoy every moment of the sunshine (let’s hope we get some).
We wake up in the morning and the first thing we do when we get downstairs is open up our VELUX INTEGRA roof windows. We had them in our previous extension in our old house too, and they are a perfect way of getting the air circulating around the house, especially when the temperature is warmer than usual. As cheesy as it sounds, I love nothing more than opening our bifold doors and our VELUX roof windows and hearing the birds singing outside first thing in the morning.
Then on the days where the weather is nice and the sun is shining we just spend as much as we can outdoors. The children just run in and out all day long, alternating between playing indoors and outdoors. We wanted to create a space where we could bring the inside out and the outside in and with the help of the VELUX roof windows we definitely do that. It really feels like the room is an extension of outside and it makes the garden almost feel like an extra room in our house.
However because we live in the UK we of course can’t rely on the weather to be nice all the time. We chose VELUX INTEGRA solar roof windows as they had some great features, such as rain sensors. If (or should we say an inevitable when) it starts to rain, the windows will automatically shut for you. This is such good peace of mind if you have gone out and forgotten to shut them, or you are just busy around the house.
We just love the space we have created so much, like I mentioned at the start it really is the hub of our family home. We can’t wait to enjoy it even more over the summer months.
