2013 is behind us, and we said goodbye to one of the best years of our lives so far with home made Mexican food and cocktails followed by a riveting game of Scrabble, and me promptly falling asleep just before the countdown. (I did wake up to see in the New Year though!)
I am not normally one for resolutions, and if I am they usually last approximately a week, but I have a feeling this year is going to be different for me, and I have set myself some ‘goals’ which I hope I do indeed stick to.
We are now on the second day of 2014 and today I did something both incredibly exciting and terrifying in equal measures- I handed my notice in at work and told them I wouldn’t be returning in February when my maternity leave finishes. I have been working for my current company for over five years, although since Mads was born I have been part time, so this is a huge step for me. I loved my job and my career, but my priorities have changed since becoming a Mummy. The last year or so I have been doing freelance social media management for a few different companies, and over the last few months Mr E and I have decided that I will concentrate on that in the future.
It feels scary and surreal not to be returning to work and being officially ‘freelance’, although I am used to that way of life now. I am looking forward to the challenge of working for myself, but above all I am looking forward to being at home with my babies. This way, I get to be with them more than if I had returned to my previous job. They will both be in nursery for two short days, and hopefully this will help us all, it gives me more time to get on with work and it gives them some independence.
That’s one big change for 2014. The next is that I am determined to improve my lifestyle. My diet is shocking, I don’t do any exercise and I often feel lethargic and out of sorts. While I am not overweight by any means, I have piled on the pounds since having LL, and my tummy is in a desperate need of a tone. I know that resolutions are easily broken, and I am not known for my staying power but I have joined a gym and I am going to be doing a mixture of that and running.
I have completed three runs so far, with my last yesterday being 5k in 31.5 minutes, something which I wouldn’t have even imagined I could do. Although not far or fast, I haven’t done proper exercise since school so I am pleased with my initial progress and I am hoping I will catch the running bug. I would like to lose a stone in 2014, and tone up more. I am also going to be watching my diet, but I can’t live without diet coke, the occasional chocolate (oh and Ben and Jerry’s) and carbs, so I am going to try and eat smaller portions and healthier snacks too. I am also trying to drink 1.5 litres of water a day, as I usually go most days without drinking anything but coke and then end up with a cracking headache. I will try and detail my progress on this blog, so hopefully I will see a change in my ‘Mum Tum’ and my overall outlook to diet and exercise.
I’m hoping that I will have a better work/life balance and therefore will be a better Mummy and Wife because of this, with not so many evenings spent on the laptop and more time to read, snuggle or relax with Mr E, as well as having time to switch off too. I spend far too much time on the laptop at the moment.
We have lots of things to look forward to in 2014- a wonderful holiday with Mark Warner as one of their ambassadors, another little trip with our besties, some weekends away at weddings and hen do’s, plus other bits and pieces too. I am bridesmaid for one of my good friends in May so am looking forward to that and hopefully won’t feel like a frump in my dress compared to the others! I also turn the big 30 in March, which feels surreal even typing.
I very much doubt we will be able to top 2013, after all it was the year our little family became complete with our beautiful LL, but I am definitely looking forward to trying.
